Barbara Kingsolver's book The Bean Trees explains the concept of recruitment in an unusual way. It was not until the end of the novel that Taylor Greer actually used the turtle. But she took the turtle to Arizona and served as her mother. Taylor has lots of things to help the turtle: Lou-Ann, Estevan, Esperanza, Mattie, Edna and Mrs. Parsons are all involved in turtle training. This novel seems to emphasize the role of one mother, seems to weaken the role of father. All the protagonists are raised by single mothers or single mothers. I think the authors are emphasizing this because they want the reader to understand that families and adoptions do not necessarily have to be traditional.
