The Ambiguities in Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

However, reading more carefully will reveal two important ambiguities that can be explained in at least two different ways. First of all, why does a young good guy Brown enter the forest, and secondly is it the reality of the forest, or is it a fancy journey? There are two ways to explain why Goodman Brown entered the forest. First, we can assume that he enters the forest as enlightenment or religious ceremony.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" is a story of a man named Goodman Brown who has a strong Puritan faith. Goodman Brown brought his wife to the depths of the forest with faith in a dark night led by strangers. Goodman Brown held several secret gatherings in the forest and some of his villagers were there. At this point in the story, Goodman Brown found out that he solved the hidden part of the villagers' life. "Tonight you should inform you of their secret behavior ..." (946)
