The Alaskan Way Viaduct

Spokane Street was completed in 1960. Battery Street Tunnel is an important "missing link" connecting the new waterfront structure and Aurora Avenue / SR 99. The tunnels are dug under the battery street and interference with surrounding buildings is minimal. The work began in September 1952 and was held on 24th July 1954 with magnificent ceremonies. On the south side of the viaduct, there is a high-grade iron truss girder viaduct built by Midland Railway for Cheshire Line Commission in 1877. It is called Corn Brook Viaduct. Viaduct is a truss beam structure made of red brick and wrought iron. Construction began in 1873 and completed in 1877. When it opened in 1877, it transported the train from temporary station to Ilam and Warrington as well as Cholton. In 1880, Manchester Central Station of Sir John Fowler replaced the station temporarily until 1969 and was now used as an exhibition center (G - MEX).
