The Age Of Comets

The following summary is from National Geographic of William R. Newcott (December 97, 2007). It tells how important the comets are and how they affect the planet and its people. British astronomer Edmund Halley was the first person who proposed that a comet is part of our solar system. Halley believes that a bright comet recorded long before he was born may be a comet that truly approaches the sun for as much as 76 years or so. This comet was recorded in 1531, 1607 and 1682. Halley predicts comets will reappear in 1758. When that happened, the Harley 's theory proved to be correct. The comet of Halley was named after him.
