Prior to the advancement of medical nuclear science, people were facing great pain in certain parts of the body, but screaming and homemade treatments were ineffective. With the invention of surgical instruments and surgery it has become widespread to use cancer cells to remove body parts. This will never guarantee that the patient will be healthy. Nuclear medicine is a field of medicine involving the management of radioactive substances to diagnose and treat diseases. Nuclear medicine scans are done by radiologists. This occupation of nuclear medicine is sometimes referred to as endoscopic radiology because the radiation emitted from the body is detected rather than applied externally, for example as X-ray treatment. In nuclear medicine scans, radionuclides combine with other compounds to form radiopharmaceuticals widely used in this field. When administered to patients, these radiopharmaceuticals target specific organs or cell receptors and bind selectively to them. An external detector is used to capture the radiation emitted from the radiopharmaceutical as the radiopharmaceutical moves through the body and is used to generate the image. The main field of nuclear medicine is nuclear medicine treatment. A common example of nuclear medicine treatment is the use of radioactive iodine to treat thyroid problems including thyroid cancer. The lower specialty field of oncology (cancer research and treatment) is radiation oncology. As its name implies, this oncology field is focused on the use of radiotherapy for cancer.
