The 1913 Women's Suffrage Parade

Within less than a century, women in the United States were unable to guarantee voting rights. Many brave groups worked hard at the state and provincial levels in the late nineteenth century, and slightly improved the women's suffrage. On the day before Woodrow Wilson 's appointment in 1913, the first major national effort began in Washington, DC on March 3. Organized by Alice Paul for the National Vote Association, the parade sought a constitutional amendment that included 8,000 marcesers, including nine bands, four mountain bikes, 20 floats and a fable near the financial building . The parade began late but it seemed to be a good start until the route along Pennsylvania Avenue suffocated with thousands of audiences - most of them were men in the town to attend the inauguration ceremony . The marchers were ridiculed by being pressed by many people in the crowd. Some people stumbled and some were beaten. The police seem to be sympathetic to the mob, whether they are indifferent to the marching march. By the end of the day, 100 demonstration participants were hospitalized. The abuse of the demo participants made this incident and career a significant news, leading to the hearing of Congress, the police chief lost his job. It took seven years to pass Congress since 1913. In 1920, voting for women was secured at the 19th revision.

In the 1910's, Alice Paul organized activities and organizations such as the 1913 female election parade, the National Women's Party and the Silent Sentinel with the help of Lucy Burns and many others. Paul and Barnes organized the first efforts of a large-scale suffrage march, a newly-activated NAWSA parliamentary committee. As a supporter of women's suffrage, she established the Alpha Suffrage Club for African-American women, the first vocational club for black women.
