This study examined the relationship between adolescent text messages, especially text usage, language and literacy skills. 47 children with normal language development (TD) with language specific disorder (SLI) and 47 peers of the same age participated. Participants were asked to complete an interview on cognitive, standardized assessment of linguistic and literacy skills, frequency of SMS and to send a text message to reply to the text message sent by the experimenter. Teenagers with SLI are less likely to reply to text messages than TDs. SLI non-senders (32%) have significantly lower reading comprehension than SLI senders. The SLI sender creates text shorter than the TD and does not use the text language. Correlation analysis reveals a significant positive correlation between the density of textual realism, the number of types of textual realism used, and the adolescent literacy rate.
