The Texas Labor Force Committee began accepting claims for unemployment insurance on the day Hurricane Harvey landed. FEMA has started Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) for Texans who were unemployed due to disasters. The program is managed by the state of Texas. As of September 19, the committee handled 136,576 unemployment insurance claims, 17,714 of which were DUA programs. The DUA call center is open 7 days a week. The American Red Cross donated 45 million dollars to more than 100,000 victims and responded to urgent needs. The Red Cross deployed more than 3,000 staff and volunteers, 171 emergency response vehicles in the affected counties, provided 965,000 meals, 1 million snacks and surgical shelters.
