As slavery expanded in American colonies, interest in free labor increased within that area. Due to the northern colonies, the transfer of crops, and the investment in various commerce, African slaves were forced to cooperate with their adjacent contracting servants and provide housekeeping services. Depending on the desire to increase agricultural growth and wealth, southern planters believed that slave labor is more prosperous and integrated "special institutions" into the structure of the southern aristocracy.

Slave religion is mainly Christian but it also includes the traditional elements of African religion. Religion gives slaves a self-worthing sense, bringing hope for the ransom of this world and the next generation. Spirit is a general religious expression in slavery. Slaves also used songs and folk tales to talk about sorrow, hope, pain, and happiness.
Haitan Voodoo was born out of slavery. And they combined the custom of the traditional religion Vodun with the elements of Roman Catholicism. In the meantime, slaves often underwent a process called fusion. Around 1685, the law enacted a law requiring the captain to convert a slave to Christianity within 8 days after his arrival. In their eyes, slavery was even blessed by the Catholic Church, as it gave slaves the way to God. In all of these cases, much of their spirit is naturally associated with Christian saints and Biblical depictions.
