Sunday Reading: School Days

By 1834, Reading's African American Church was taught for about 11 years at Sunday School. Many Sunday schools read to read as part of the curriculum as reading the Bible is considered essential for good Christians. In 1823, Pastor John F. Greer opened the first African-American church in Reading, the first African Presbyterian church who supervised Sunday School until he died in 1829. In 1834, White's 16-year-old Augustus Boas became the first director of the first African Presbyterian African Color Sunday School (McClellan 1957-58, 18).
