In 1862, the "Homestead Act" was passed. The government will help people settle in the Great Plains. The government sold 160 acres of land to adults for a small amount. If they can plow the land for five years, they can possess that land. The settlement and land of the settlers are known as Homestead. Many farmers from the eastern US have high farmland expenses. In the Great Plains, the land is cheap. Pioneers are coming from Europe, but there is not much land to buy there. Great Plains has plenty of land to buy. African Americans also want to start a farm again. Many African Americans are poor. After the civil war, they faced prejudice and violence. They opened their town in Kansas. After the Biblical book tells stories of how people have escaped slavery, African American settlers were called Egyptians.

Settlers need to learn how to farm in the Great Plains in the face of difficult pioneers. The soil is gathered at the grassroots. It is called grass. Pioneers were called lawn mowers as they had to break through the turf in order to grow the crop. Because there are not many trees, the settlers will build a house with grass. Winter is long and cold. Summer is hot and dry. Lots of drought. There is a grass fire as it is dry. Farmers must cultivate crops that require less water. They carry water from the stream. Some farmers use windmills to pump water from the ground. In the 1870's, millions of crickets ate crops. In this area farmers are using new and better agricultural machines because there are not so many people engaged in agriculture. New machines make growing more crops easier
