In the Great Plains, the land is cheap. Pioneers are coming from Europe, but there is not much land to buy there. Great Plains has plenty of land to buy. African Americans also want to start a farm again. Many African Americans are poor. After the civil war, they faced prejudice and violence. They opened their town in Kansas. Some farmers use windmills to pump water from the ground. In the 1870's, millions of crickets ate crops. In this area farmers are using new and better agricultural machines because there are not so many people engaged in agriculture. New machines make growing more crops easier
