Substance Abuse

The effect of substance abuse is estimated to be 25 million Americans. For those indirectly affected, such as those who were injured or murdered by abuser's family or drunk driver, an additional 40 million people will be affected. The cost of social and economic money should be alarming for productivity decline, property damage, accident and health care. Alcoholism is a progressive disease that afflicts 10 million adults and 3 million children. An estimated 12.5 million Americans are addicted to other drugs such as sedative hypnotics, barbiturates, opioids, sedatives, hallucinogens, psychostimulants.

Substance abuse includes a number of symptoms and warning signs including: regular use of substance (daily, weekend or overeating), resistance to substance, not having discontinued use of the substance, physical and / or Psychological dependence, or abstinence (tremor, tremor, hallucination, perspiration, high blood pressure) and, in some cases, Alzheimer's disease

The specific cause of substance abuse is not clear, but it seems to be a combination of genetic, environmental and social factors.

Treatment of substance abuse is aimed at abstinence including various treatment methods. Psychotherapy helps patients understand their behavior and motivation, extend their self-esteem and deal with stress. Self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous are very effective at helping patients build support networks. In some cases, using medicines such as anthracene or methadone may have some effect.
