Several schools do their best to help new students adapt to leaving home and become university students. Whether university chose to participate in FYE is an important factor in judging the success of college students.

When students begin their careers at college, their adjustment to the environment is important for them to continue success at the university. Social and academic coordination may include student's own abilities, motivation, academic performance, and positive recognition of academic performance and social engagement at the university's campus (page 256). When students think that the level of campus coordination is high, it will have a major impact on their university commitment and overall consolidation. It is important to note that many universities focus on providing scholarly aid (eg writing tutorials, peer coaching etc) but social coordination is important for the university's commitment . Therefore, academic institutions must also consider ways to enhance social coordination (page 269).
