Strategic planning helps enterprises decide how to make future revenue. The financial plan goes further and the company is based on a strategic plan that helps the firm determine short- and long-term budgets and the effectiveness of the plan.

Expanding financial statement forecasts to the future without considering the competitive environment is not a strategic plan but a form of financial planning or budgeting. In the business, the term "financial plan" is often used to describe the expected financial performance of a future organization. The term "budget" is used for the financial plan for the next fiscal year. "Forecasting" is usually a combination of year-year performance and other year's predicted performance, so it is usually compared to plan or budget and past performance. The financial plan attached to the strategic plan may include forecast results of 3 to 5 years.
