This paper examines the role of literature (short story) in the development of oral and writing skills among high school students in the Swat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) district of Pakistan. Literature indicates that the current practice of English education at high school is grammar translation (GTM). And it is taught in the first language, the translation of the word is complete and the language is completed. In addition, focus is on rotate learning and memory, which leads to student 's integrated thinking development. Therefore, the student should get the right answer. Research shows that literature plays an important role in developing student's speaking and writing skills. Most of the research reports so far were conducted at the primary level. There has been little research on how literature plays an important role in raising oral and writing skills of high school students. Furthermore, in the current literature, the role of literature, especially short stories and other similar content is ignored and underestimates the development of oral and writing skills with students. For this purpose, researchers conducted a survey to understand the role of short stories in the development of high school students' writing skills and conversation skills. In order to collect data, researchers designed and managed a structured questionnaire for 302 students. Students are selected by random sampling. The results of this survey demonstrate that teaching English through literature will help students improve their conversation skills and writing skills. This study also found that, except for some major differences, the roles of women and men's students in the development of high school students' language and writing skills are about the same. Based on this, in this paper I believe that literature (short story) can be used as a skill to hone students' verbal and written skills.
The findings are based on three research questions. Two skills (spoken and written skills) are reported in the summary of the studies based on student and instructor performance. A summary of the results is based on the percentage of responses to the statement of the questionnaire based on the agreement. According to Figure 1, on average, more than half of the students report that it is difficult to write. Writing grammatically correct sentences (71%), then selecting the appropriate words (66%), and developing and organizing the sentences (56.5%) were the most problematic writing sub skills. Students' least troublesome writing sub skill is sentences (46.8%) of connected paragraphs, correctly spelled text (47.7%), and paragraph (47.7%) combined in articles.
