Southwest Airlines exceeded domestic monthly passenger ranking for the first time in May 2003. Year-end results for 2009 show that Southwest Airlines achieved profitability for 34 consecutive years. Southwest Airlines has become a major airline with revenues in excess of billions of dollars in 1989 and is the most successful low cost, high frequency point to point operator in the United States.

A low cost provider strategy is a strategy to reduce costs through the value chain system (Broydrick 1995). However, the low cost provider strategy is not a complete solution to all problems.
