South Dakota generally can be divided into three areas: Eastern South Dakota State, Western South Dakota State, and Montenegro. The Missouri River is the boundary between geographical, social and political differences in eastern and western South Dakota. The Missouri National Recreation River protects the two rivers in the state in the southeastern state; 39 miles from Fortland Doll Dam to Running Water, 59 miles from Gavinsleigh Dam in Ponca State Park, Nebraska. These parts of the river are most unlikely to be affected by the four dams in South Dakota Province, offering unique landscapes and ecosystems. In the entire Missouri River you can enjoy boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Visitors can also camp in the river, bird watching and hiking.
