The population of Japan is 127,103,388, the tenth largest country in the world. It is the 62nd largest country in the world with an area of 377,915 square kilometers.

In 1603, after the civil war of decades, the Tokugawa shogunate (military-led dynasty government) came to isolation from the relative long-term political stability and the influence of foreign countries. With this policy, for over two centuries, Japan was able to enjoy the prosperity of its indigenous culture. After signing the "Kanagawa Treaty" with the United States in 1854, Japan opened a harbor and began to focus on modernization and industrialization. From the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, Japan became a regional power that could defeat China and Russia. It occupied South Korea, Formosa (Taiwan) and South Sakhalin. From 1931 to 1932, Japan occupied Manchuria and invaded China in 1937. In 1941 Japan attacked the US Army, triggered the United States into World War II, and soon occupied the majority of East Asia and Southeast Asia. After the defeat in World War II, Japan regained its position as an economic superpower and the allies of the United States. The emperor retained his throne as a symbol of national unity, but elected politicians had actual decision-making power. After 30 years of unprecedented growth, the Japanese economy experienced a significant slowdown since the 1990s, but it is still a major economic power. In March 2011, due to the strongest earthquake in Japan and the accompanying tsunami, the northeastern part of Honshu was destroyed, thousands of people died and several nuclear power plants were destroyed. This disaster interfered with the country's economic and energy infrastructure and tested its ability to respond to humanitarian disasters.
