The word "ceramic" comes from Greek Keramikos (κεραμικος), which means "pottery", in other words from "Keramos (κεραμος)" which means "pottery clay". The majority of traditional ceramic products are made from clay (or clay mixed with other materials), molded and exposed to heat. Cutlery and decorative ceramics are usually manufactured in this way. In modern ceramic engineering, ceramics are the technology and science of making objects from inorganic nonmetallic materials by thermal action. Glass inlay made glass and mosaic are not included.

Ceramic is a technique to make objects from clay. Clay is a natural material manipulated and decorated to create ceramic art. When dry, the clay resembles a powder, but when it is mixed with water it becomes a moldable plastic material which is extruded, rolled up or dried to make it fragile. After the clay is completely dry and cold feels it must be fired in a furnace at temperatures up to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit. This permits the new shape to be permanent and changes the chemical composition of the clay so that it can no longer be made into a moldable plastic state. Ceramists use a lot of techniques to make pottery. The slabstructure (rugged and soft), coils, handmade, polished ceramic wheels are all means to make ceramic ceramics. The main requirement of pottery is that it must be hollow
