"When only other soldiers can understand their change, how do you get back to the real world?" (Swofford 12). This is a feeling that almost all soldiers came back from war. People asked them what happened there and asked the number of people they killed during the war. My family just ceased thinking they were home. When the soldiers came home, what they wanted to do was to forget what they did until they were ready to talk about it. Diaz said, "We are not talking about the possibility of his returning to war" (16).

When American soldiers returned from World War II in 1945, they were called heroes in the United States. Towns throughout the country commemorated the veterans who returned and demonstrated to admit the sacrifices they did. However, for most Vietnamese veterans, the return is very different. When they returned, they discovered that the United States was torn apart by a controversy over the Vietnam War. There is neither a victory parade nor a welcome to the home rally. Instead, most of the Vietnam war veterans seemed to return to a society that seemed not to care for them, or treat them with distrust and anger.

When American soldiers returned from World War II, they were called heroes. In commemoration of their sacrifice, a parade was held everywhere. Unfortunately, these honors seem to be a veteran luxury of the Vietnam War. They are being abused. Several veterans recalled that when they just landed, people demonstrated against them. "A lot of people spit us out and call us us rude names." The American society was divided by the Vietnam War as the people were full of doubts about their justice. In addition, Vietnam is a very unpopular war compared to the Second World War. As a result, the masses of the Americans have tried to forget it, and they also tend to forget that veteran.
