Social Service Organizations

Today, community service organizations are very needed. The population of many cities and countries is increasing, more shelters and soup kitchens are needed. Most of these organizations are church - based communities. Then there are other federal and state governments that fund it. The Durham Rescue Mission is a church-based organization. They provide much assistance and protection to homeless people and low-income households. Pastor Arnie Mills established this mission in 1974.

Community service organizations are committed to meeting the needs of a wide range of low-income households. These institutions are part of a larger system that includes government services and government funds to the private sector. Significant changes in part of the network will affect other parts as well. The personal responsibility and employment opportunity reconciliation law (PRWORA) adopted in 1996 dramatically changed the welfare policy. Welfare recipients are currently facing the deadline for qualification for cash aid. As these social welfare policies have changed dramatically, many people are hoping that social services offered by private organizations will also be affected.
