On October 25, 1969, Malcolm X Liberation University opened in Durham. The school was founded by a black activist Howard Fuller and named after the recently murdered civil rights leader Malcolm X. It was established in response to Duke's student protest against the lack of an African American study program. The school was originally housed in a socks factory at Pettigrew Street. In the first year, there were 12 students and 40 teachers at the university. This course clearly focuses on meeting the needs of black students to promote the cause of the Black Liberation Movement. In a two-year course, students learn about African history, slavery, colonialism and then receive technical training to prepare for careers focused on citizenship.
