The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) intends to reduce GCE [General Level (O / L)] to six core subjects that pass the exam and the other four subjects included in the examination are taken into account It will not be.
The committee to study the structural change of the O / L test made recommendations to the Ministry of Education.
According to senior officials of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the six core subjects are religion and value education, first language, mathematics, science, English and historical and social studies.
Other subjects will be aesthetic research or other language or technical research, second language, sports and ICT
Another important recommendation is that the number of weekly sessions per core subject is equal, there are at least five periods per week, different periods are assigned different periods according to theme.
Akila Viraj Kariyawasam education minister said that he hoped to obtain a general view on these recommendations before implementing the plan.
Senior executives involved in making changes say that the goal is not to answer questions by remembering preparation and answers to the exam, but to improve children's creativity
"The new system will not focus on exam alone, but will provide comprehensive education and discuss proposals with staff and experts," the official said.
In 1978, the GCE A / L trial was first transferred in August. Since 1978, the GCE A / L test has been regularly held in August every year until 2001. Between 2000 and 2001, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Higher Education Committee and the National Board of Education conducted extensive discussions to review the exam schedule to reduce student waiting time. After careful consideration of all included problems, the decision is as follows. In conducting the A / L test in August, it is impossible to start the A / L course for freshmen who participated in the GCE O / L test the following December. . Classes and teachers are available for new students only in September. As a result, those who conducted the O / L inspection in December waited nearly 9 months and wasted valuable time in the Golden Age.
I am a student and it is a very valuable goal to pass the O / L exam. So I will study hard, I think I can pass the 9As exam. After finishing O / L, I select subjects as A / L from Science Stream and I will start working hard and do my exams. I will go to the University of Peradeniya. It is my dream to become a doctor and treat the patient. I want to build a beautiful big house. These are my future plans.
In the national exam of Sri Lanka, the GCE A / L exam is considered to be the most important and competitive exam, which determines the future of our young people. In addition, our GCE A / L exam is considered today as one of the most competitive exams in the world. Therefore, it is clear that if you change or adjust this inspection, our educational system will be greatly affected. From this point of view, we need to consider the necessity and relevance of holding a test in April rather than holding a test every August.
For the first time in history, the GCE A / L test was transferred in April 1969. The exam was held in April until 1977. Another major development took place during this period. The actual inspection of scientific subjects was abolished in the mid-1970s, deviating from accepted international practices. However, during this period and before 1977, it is possible to register students eligible for admission to the university in October of the same year. During this period, the university began studying regularly from October, and finished in July to August, and achieved a smooth transition from secondary school to university / university education. Therefore, the students did not waste too much time to wait to enter the university at this point.
