I believe that the main purpose of imprisonment is to protect the community. When we imprison a person we may point to punishment, rehabilitation and retribution, but basically we protect the entire community from personal harm that we believe is dangerous. At the same time, when we deprive individuals of the freedom to protect individuals or the entire community, I have to account for them individually and that he or someday return to a secure free society I believe we can.
