Sexual assault and rape are serious social and public health problems in the United States. The vast majority of women are victims of sexual assault and rape, and men are mostly perpetrators. In a nationwide survey in the United States, it is estimated that one in six women experienced attempted rape or accomplishment at some point (Basile, Lang, Bartenfeld and Clinton-Sherrod, 2005). The majority of women are sexually assaulted by familiar men. Sexual assault is seriously inappropriate as women know the attackers, they are much less likely to report rape and assault. In this article we will explore some of the reasons women do not report attacks to formal support agencies and explore ways for social welfare agencies to reach out to women who need assistance.
