The School Safety Center provides resources to help districts and schools develop high quality emergency response and safety programs. Safety is the foundation of an active learning environment. RCW 28A.320.125 requires all public school districts and public schools to develop current school safety plans and procedures. The School Safety Center is an integral part of student support, working closely with system and school improvement, and with other parts of OSPI. In addition, the School Safety Advisory Committee scheduled regularly complements our commitment to ensure the safety of all students at school everyday.
The "Safety Planning Guide" is based on "Guidelines for Developing High-Quality School's Emergency Plan" and is a joint effort of USDOE, FEMA, Department of Homeland Security and several other federal agencies.

The National School Safety Center is a supporter of safe, safe and peaceful schools around the world and is a catalyst to prevent school crime and violence. The NSSC provides high quality information, resources, consulting and training services to the school community and its school's security partners. As part of a comprehensive academic mission, the National School Safety Center identifies and promotes strategies, promising practices, and programs to support all school safety schools. The National School Safety Center believes that the school can create and maintain a safe school or return school to a safe, safe and effective study place. We believe that this work will be done best with the help of school security partners. We believe there are many opportunities today to apply the best school safety research and practice to the safety school vision of all the students.
The National School Safety Center was established in 1984 by the president as Ronald Reagan as a joint program of the US Department of Education and Justice Department. This center is currently operated as an independent nonprofit organization that provides training and technical assistance in the field of safe school programs and school crime prevention for schools and communities around the world. NSSC is a long-term leader in school safety assessment. In addition, the NSSC publishes various publications and training videos to support safe and enthusiastic schools.
In 2000, Virginia State established Virginia State School Safety Center. This included a review of compulsory school safety audits and provision of training and technical assistance to the school district. The center also oversees the program to provide school resource officers working with local police to promote school safety. In 2002, Virginia passed a law requiring the accreditation of all school security personnel employed at schools in Virginia and successfully completed elementary level and on-the-job training (Va. Code, ยง 9.1 - 184) . The state provides some funds through the State Criminal Justice Service Bureau that is part of the state, but the Virginia School Safety Center is mainly funded by federal government subsidies.
