School Safety: Our Most Important Responsibility

On Wednesday, January 5, 2011, a high school student at Miradonan entered high school with a gun. The boy was interrupted school early in the morning. He applied for the office and went to aid the principal's office. The clerical staff reported gunshots within 4 minutes. When he tried to intervene, the student shot the assistant principal and the principal. He continued artillery, aimed at the guardian of the school, and then aimed security guards while running away from the premises.

Student safety is one of our most important obligations and the Council Rock School District promises to make sure we are doing our best to fulfill this responsibility. We have a full time regional security manager, Bill Rick. Bill Rick oversees a site-based comprehensive security program. All of these are updated every September. Under Mr. Lake's guidance, we carried out a series of safety exercises related to intense shooting events. Specifically, during the academic year, each building carried out two lockout exercises, two safety air raid exercises, and two local evacuation drills.

Teaching school safety procedures to students is one of the most important things we can do as a teacher. In case of an emergency, the student already knows the school's safety procedure and needs to practice it. In the first week we will explain and practice the fire and tornado procedures and intrusion procedures at school. It is important that these safety procedures be discussed and reviewed several times during the first week of school and throughout the school year!

Principals, managerial positions and teachers have an important responsibility to protect the lives of their children on campus. Understanding policies, procedures, and strategies is important. School safety training and meetings are important materials to prevent, identify and reduce potential conflicts. The principal's daily responsibilities vary depending on the level of the school (primary school, junior high school, high school student), the number of students, and the school district. In large schools additional resources may be required, such as teaching coordinators and support staff to support workloads. In small schools and areas, most of our daily work belongs to clients. Usually the principal will work throughout the year during the summer. This is an important moment as preparation for the next grade.
