Salvador Luria and Max Delbruck showed statistical evidence that certain mutants such as virus tolerance occur randomly in bacterial populations even in the absence of virus. More importantly, they also occur in a few people and in other cultures. Results called wave analysis show that tolerance develops before exposure to phage and it is contrary to the adaptation hypothesis of mutation. Together with Delbruck and Hershey, Luria received the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1969.
