Rules for Using Commas Effectively

Author Pico Iyer compares the comma with the "bless the humble comma" essay, "flashing yellow light that requires us to slow down." But when do we need to flush? When will the sentence continue without interruption?

Here we consider four main criteria for effectively using commas. But remember, these are just guidelines, not laws.

As a general rule, use a comma (but, or, or, or similarly) before linking the public connections of the two main clauses.

"The drought lasted ten million years, and the dominance of a terrible lizard is long after the end."

"The color of the sky is dark and gray, the plane begins to shake, Francis was in bad weather but he did not shake so much"

"In our country there are three unexplainable things that none of the freedom of speech, freedom of conscience, and discretion can never be practiced for the good of God."

In each example, the comma is displayed before the conjunction, but it is not displayed after it. This special comma is called a serial comma (aka Oxford comma) and is not mandatory for all style guides. For details, what is an Oxford (or serial) comma? Please refer to.

In the next Animal Farm paragraph, observe how George Orwell uses a comma to separate the main phrases that appear in more than two series.

People are not producing and consuming only. He will not give milk, he will not lay eggs, he is too weak to take pulls, he will not run fast enough to catch a rabbit. But he is the owner of all animals. He gave them a chance to work, they gave them the minimum to keep them from starving, and kept the rest for himself

"In front of the room, a tuxedo man and a light bow tie requested on his portable keyboard."

"Because my brothers and sisters are short, I am shy and clumsy for people's interaction and push-pull."

However, if there is no danger of confusing the reader, you can omit the comma after a short introduction.

"I felt drowned the fans' cappuccino and the 20 ounces of dew of the mountain as I thought it was an issue to wake up at first."

"My brothers were mostly intelligent people, but I promised to teach him how to invest in the booklet and tell them.

"Your manuscript is good and original, but the good part is not original and the original part is not good."

When an adverb phrase begins a sentence, it usually follows a comma, but especially if it is short, that is not necessarily the case. As a rule of thumb, if the phrase exceeds about 4 words, please use a comma. If you want to emphasize, you can also use a comma of short phrases or add a pause for literary effects. Some small ideas pop up in the middle of the sentence to express interruptions, emotions, intonation and emphasis. Parenthesis elements are clauses that add additional information to sentences but can be deleted without changing the meaning of the sentences. Both the interrupter and the parentheses element must be represented by a comma.

When writing parentheses, you can use three types of punctuation marks: dash, comma, and parenthesis. Part 1: Comma You may be most familiar with commas. There are many rules on the use of commas, but here we are focusing on only one. Use a comma to set bracket expression.
