The hard corrosion control method provides a more durable solution than the soft corrosion control method. Revetment and breakwaters are semi-permanent infrastructure. These structures are not protected from normal wear and must be refurbished or rebuilt. The average life expectancy of the revetment is estimated to be 50 to 100 years, while the average life span of the revetment is 30 to 40 years. Because of their relative durability, these structures are believed to be the ultimate solution to erosion.

There are two general definitions of coastal erosion. First, coastal erosion is often defined as the loss or loss of land along the coastline due to the effects of waves, flow, tides, wind by water, water ice, and other storms.
