A new collaboration between Willow Garage, Georgia Tech University Medical Robotics Institute, and Henry and Jane Evans was announced. This project is called a human robot

Henry Evans is a quadriplegic who developed a stroke at the age of 40. After thorough treatment, Henry regained its ability to move his head and use his fingers, which allowed him to operate the computer. Last year, Henry was interviewed by Professor Charlie Kemp of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the research results of the Willow Garage PR 2 robot was introduced. Shortly thereafter, Henry contacted Professor Willow Garage and Kemp. Since then, we have worked.

We are investigating how Henry uses the PR2 robot as his agent. It is considered as a matter of course that it is just an act of pricking itch every day. In case of Henry, there are itching two or three times a day, but you can not scratch it. With the help of PR 2, Henry was able to scratch himself for the first time in ten years.

This is only the first step, but it shows how a severely disabled person can self-support using a personal robot. In another example, Henry recently shaved his cheek using PR2. We are actively researching how Henry and other people routinely perform these tasks.

Currently, Henry uses a head tracker to manipulate a variety of experimental user interfaces. Through these interfaces, he can move the body of the robot directly, including the arm and head. You can also take autonomous actions, such as moving through the room or reaching a specific place.

Robots that complement human capabilities are very beneficial when we help you, especially what we can not do. Our goal is that home robots will help people like Henry and Jane Evans. This is just the beginning
