Perugia has introduced a new system for monitoring, managing and controlling traffic to improve traffic safety. This system provides drivers with real-time information on traffic flow, traffic jam level, possible security risks in various road segments, and reliable routes.

Implementation of all system components has been completed. Road samples for pilots are clearly established. The monitoring center is mainly based on the use of two software systems: UTOPIA (already used since 2002 and MISTIC. UTOPIA receives and processes data from signal traffic at major intersections. MISTIC uses output data from UTOPIA and data from sensors installed on the main road. This enhances the level of accuracy required to update the traffic model in real time. In addition, MISTIC provides projections on traffic and safety conditions. A trial version of the above software (MISTIC) has been created and is being tested

Drivers are encouraged to use the actual information provided by VMS to use more reliable routes. The driver will get information on the danger of the accident (according to traffic conditions). The cycle of the traffic signal is adjusted according to the risk of the accident

This system designs a traffic control strategy to identify congested roads and security risks. This is accomplished through an information platform that collects data from VMS. The system gathers information first, evaluates the data for forecasting traffic (in real time), and calculates traffic jam levels and security risks for different road sections. Drivers are guided to more reliable routes via VMS and they get information about the dangers of accidents. The cycle of the traffic signal is adjusted according to the risk level of different road sections. The main challenges are (i) Establishing a system for information gathering and data analysis, (ii) Flow model planning, and (iii) Developing new movement strategies to improve road safety, resulting in accidents and deaths It is a reduction of people.

Dr. Eleonora Papadimitriou, researcher of traffic safety, traffic engineering, transportation system, said that the type of road, the flow of traffic, traffic control had a major impact on the choice of intersection. She discovered three new elements of pedestrian behavior: 'adventure and optimization', 'conservative public transport user' and 'pedestrian music'. These are very specific factors that need to consider pedestrian behavior on the road and its reasons.
