Resistance to slavery in the early 18th century and racially oppressive slavery were terrible for African Americans. Men were killed, women were raped, and children trafficked. In this semester, I am participating in an African-American research class called "Life of struggle: minorities in most cultures". One of the prominent themes that we discussed is resistance. That is what the format is, how effective it is and how it contributed to today's historical results. In this class, I first learned what Capoeira is, but this is a unique dance form by slaves of Portuguese colonists who came from West Africa and Brazil 500 years ago. But it is more than just dancing. It involves martial arts disguised as an element of cleverly rhythmical and passionate dance and the slaves practice to defend themselves and to celebrate their culture.
