Researching and Writing in the Twilight of an Imagined Conquest: Anthropology in Northern Rhodesia 1930–1960

A wealth of information created by the anthropologist of the Ryder Livingstone Institute (RLI) dominates the past of Zambia society and Zambia. RLI focuses on the socio-cultural impact of migrant workers. This paper argues that RLI anthropologists are working in a paradigm that is dominated by South African colonial conquest. The anthropologists of RLI moved their understanding of South African colonial conquest into North Rhodesia without actually analyzing the way colonial rule was established in North Rhodesia. Therefore, the anthropologist of RLI is working under the misunderstanding of the past. This paper argues that the historical paradigm of colonial conquest that applies to the situation in South Africa is undoubtedly used by anthropologists of North Rhodesia and discusses the influence of this paradigm on the understanding of the history of Zambia.

The problem discussed in this paper is that societal and technological change will occur when society like society like the then North Rhodesia experienced rigorous development.
