On February 20, 1962, John Glen, one of the first seven Mercury astronauts, became the first American to go around the globe. However, service to his country did not start or end. Glenn is a US Marine fighter pilot, a veteran in both wars, and with Ohio 's Senator the second time in 1998 he again became an astronaut. He is also a close friend of the National Air and Space Museum.

Born in Cambridge, Ohio, Glen grew up in a nearby New Concord. In 1942 he volunteered to join the Marine Corps and married Anna Caster before going abroad. They later had two children. From 1944 to 1945, Glenn performed 59 combat missions in the Pacific region. During the Korean War he carried out two battle patrols of jet fighter aircraft and shot down three MiG-15s. In 1956 he became a naval test pilot and in 1959 NASA elected him as an astronaut.

In 1962, on a three-track flight of Friendship 7, Glenn worked well in the face of worrying problems. After retiring from the astronaut, he ran to the political office, served as a senior executive, and was elected Senator in 1974. He retired in early January 1999
