Remembering August 21: Ninoy Aquino Day

Every August 21, we celebrate national holidays to celebrate the death of Ninoy Aquino Jr. But who is Ninoy and what did he do for his own holiday?

Benigno Aquino Jr., or for short, Ninoy is a former Filipino senator imprisoned for eight years after the declaration of martial law in the Philippines. During his tenure as President of Ferdinand Marcos, he was one of the democratic combatants of the country. He also cooperated with his wife, Corazon Aquino, to combat Filipino oppression.

Ninoy is a solid supporter of democracy, a famous opponent of the martial law era. When he returned to the Philippines for treatment from the United States, he planned to challenge Marcos in parliamentary elections in 1984. After returning home on August 21, 1983, he was shot dead at Aquino International Airport in the apron of Manila International Airport (now Ninoy) after landing. This caused several protests and led to the presidential election in 1986. His wife Corason Aquino has defeated Ferdinand Marcos. Ninoy Aquino is also the father of Former Philippine President Benigno "Neuilly" Aquino III

The holiday on August 21 was signed by the law by President Gloria Macapagal - Arroyo in February 2004 after the death of Aquino in February 2004.
