Religious education and children's literature have a long history. The earliest child-oriented book is only a religious or biblical story reworked with joy of pleasure for children. However, with the development of child literature, it began to shift from religious education to a more story-oriented piece. This does not mean that these two are mutually incompatible. Many pieces that are still very popular with children are filled with religious allegories without sacrificing the story.

The leader of the Golden Age, and many writers are George McDonald. One of his most famous books, the princess and the goblin, will introduce the fantasy and magical elements later seen by writers such as C. S. Lewis and Madeleine L'Engle. In the novel, the underground goblin plans to kidnap the 8 year old Princess Eileen and marry her to gnome prince Halilip. This is quite different from the story that focused mainly on moral training so far.

George McDonald introduced the iconic world to the princess and the goblins. Its role plays a saintly grandmother, a goblin of ugly sly, an innocent princess, a benevolent king, a brave miner. A great grandmother represents a sacred existence. This is also a symbol of the spiritual hierarchy of this story. Princess Irene is looking for a royal identity trip under the guidance of a trustworthy grandmother like her child. Minor boy Cardy did not discover his spiritual dynasty through his own grandmother. Through his account of these characters, McDonald's explained a larger theme between imagination and the "spiritual royal family". And it refers to the inner virtues of the soul. The author discovered their spiritual royal family as a saintly symbol of great grandmother, Princess Eileen as a princess and as a boy of his wife, Cardy.
