The starting point of mechanical freezing since the beginning of the 19th century is characterized by the use of natural refrigerants. Water and air are the first refrigerants considered for mechanical refrigeration systems. The refrigerator manufactured from the latter half of the 19th century until 1929 used the first generation refrigerant such as methyl chloride, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and so on. Normal refrigerant in the first 100 years includes available refrigerant and available refrigerant. Almost all first generation refrigerants are flammable, toxic, or both, and some are very reactive. Features of some first generation refrigerants are discussed below.
