Reflective learning

PDP is based on introspective learning theory and emphasizes that learning is derived from our experience and continually updated by thinking about our experiences. A very important aspect of introspective learning is that it is a process that we can understand ourselves. Gibbs' reflex cycle identified 6 stages of contemplation to help students understand learning experiences.

In higher education and graduate employment, the importance of becoming an introspective learner is highly appreciated. This means what students can do:

Sometimes we will review what happened to us. PDP makes this process more formal. Students are often required to write their opinions in the form of blogs or introspection reports. This encourages students' customs. Students' habits help to become more reflective learners.

Reflective learning takes place in several areas such as education, nursing, pediatrics, social work and so on. Several overlapping terms reflexive learning, critical reflection, transitive learning, and behavioral research are also used to describe reflective learning. Reflective learning can be defined as "internal review and exploration of the process of interest that leads to the creation and clarification of self-significance and change of conceptual concepts as a trigger" (Lam, Wong & Leung, 2007: 93). Therefore, learning is a positive development process and personal responsibility. The knowledge that people learn will be part of the knowledge system that will be incorporated into future introspective observations. Reflex learning can be viewed as a cumulative process of past experience and contemplation shaping and building future learning (quoted in Boyd & Fales, 1985, Lam et al., 2007: 93).
