On December 13, 2017 Redbox started a new service called Redbox On Demand. Like the Redbox Instant, this is a streaming service, but it is based on a different model. No membership is required. The list contains new versions and multiple titles that are claimed not to be available for services such as Netflix. Redbox began in 2004 with a kiosk that changed the brand that was built and operated by Silicon Valley DVDPlay in 140 McDonald's restaurants and other test markets in Denver. In April 2005 Redbox discontinued the DVDPlay machine and signed a contract with Solectron, a subsidiary of Flextronics, which also produced Zune, Xbox, and Xbox 360 to create and manufacture custom kiosk designs. Mitch Lowe joined Redbox in 2003 as an executive of Netflix for five years. At Redbox, he served as a consultant and served as vice president of procurement and operations.
