Recycling Nuclear Waste--Too Dangerous or the Way to a Better Tomorrow?

The United States needs to address the growing energy crisis as soon as possible. Nuclear power is just one way to mitigate domestic stress. However, one major problem remains unresolved. What happens to waste during refueling process? At the moment there are two solutions. It is saving and reprocessing. Postprocessing has many risks. The main problem is whether these risks outweigh the benefits. All power generation processes are wasted. The nuclear power generation process is no exception.

Certain nuclear wastes can be recycled, but other types of nuclear waste are considered to be dangerous to recycle. Low-level waste includes radioactive materials from research activities, medical waste, and nuclear reactor contamination equipment. Nickel is the major building metal in the field of nuclear power generation, most of which are recycled after surface contamination has been removed. High level waste arises from reprocessing of spent fuel (partially consumed nuclear fuel) and processing of nuclear weapons. These wastes emit gamma rays, which can cause birth defects, illness, and death. Advanced nuclear waste is very toxic and can not usually be recycled. Instead it is melted in an inert glass tube housed in a stainless steel cylinder and then stored in the basement.

Recycling and disposal can remove large amounts of harmful radioactivity from nuclear waste once properly processed and handled. Even without radioactive elements, this waste is still very dangerous to the surrounding environment. Heavy metals and other pollutants can change the local groundwater level and destroy local ecosystems in an unpredictable way. The strengths and weaknesses of these nuclear energies indicate that there are some advantages when taking appropriate safety measures for resources. The problem faced by many people is that without these precautions the result of using nuclear power can cause catastrophic blows for a long time.
