In the wild, Puya raimondii, also known as Queen of the Andes, only blooms when the plant reaches 80 to 100 years old.
Currently, the plant at the University of California Berkeley Botanical Gardens is preparing for flowering.
Paul Licht, principal of the University of California Botanical Gardens, says, "I have been here for 11 years and I check it every year and I'm dreaming of blooming.
Normally in South America cactus-like plants grow beyond 12,000 feet above sea level, but the University of California Botanical Garden Puya raimondii survives.
"They adapt to cold and dry soil conditions, but that does not mean what they are doing, they just do not have any choice," Licht said.
The Berkeley factory is about 24 years old and makes flowers that can grow to 30 feet in height. When it is in full bloom, it will decorate up to 30,000 flowers
