Ralph Ellison's Battle Royal

"The Royal Battle", a short story written by Ralph Ellison written in 1952. This is a story about a young black man who recently graduated from high school. He lives in the south and is encouraged to speak at a rally led by a white citizen. There he was told to participate in the battle of royalty, and there were nine other blacks. After the battle and the speech, he was awarded a calfskin briefcase and a scholarship to Negros State University.
