Facing freedom, what is freedom? Since its nature and parameters are only proved by its constraints and restrictions, freedom itself can not be defined. It will never really be 'free' if the state of existence can not stand on its own merit and depend on the structure of another existence. Ironically, freedom is surrounded by its limits, regardless of its range. Without obvious obstacles, it can not exist. If it is within the barriers, does it really exist?
The first limitation that humans face when exercising unlimited freedom is the limit imposed on us by society. A human being is a social animal that agrees to abandon certain rights and freedoms to gain the benefit of living in society. Various social theorists have explained this under the concept of "social contract". The first factor is the inheritance of our society and parents. Not only social conscience to the group but also succession of genetic material to the next generation is "a system of ideas and beliefs that create social images among all members of society".
The definition of freedom as a ternary relationship was first proposed in the pioneering work of Felix Oppenheim in the 1950s and 1960s. Oppenheim believes that the important meaning of "freedom" in the context of political and social philosophy is the relationship between two agents and a specific (disturbed or undisturbed) behavior . But the interpretation of this freedom is still the so-called negative freedom of Berlin. What MacCallum does is to generalize this ternary structure, covering all possible arguments about freedom whether negative or positive. Unlike Oppenheim in the MacCallum framework, the interpretation of each of the three variables is open. In other words, McCallum's position is a meta-theoretical position. He is the theory about the difference between liberal theorists.
