In the history of art in Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico is only 512 years old. On November 19, 1493, Christopher Columbus discovered the island for the second time traveling to the New World. On the island he found a Taino Indian living there. Fan Ponce De Leon came to the island as the first governor in 1508. In 1521, San Juan City was founded. From the 17th century to the 18th century Puerto Rico was attacked by Spanish enemies, Dutch and British. The island is striving to achieve economic stability through small herdgrowing and agriculture.

The art of Puerto Rico reflects a lot of influence mainly from the background of its ethnic diversity. The folk art form called Santos evolved from the use of sculpture by the Catholic Church to turn Puerto Rican into Christianity. Santos depicts images of saints and other religious idols and is made of native trees, clay and stone. After formatting is easy, they are usually done by drawing them with vivid colors. The size of Santos varies, the smallest example is about 8 inches, the largest is about 20 inches. Traditionally, Santos is seen as a messenger between the earth and heaven. So, they take a special position in the family altar, people pray to them, ask for help, or try to call for protection of them.

The population of Puerto Ricans and their descendants is estimated to be from 8 million to 10 million people worldwide, most of which live in Puerto Rico and the mainland of the United States. In the US, Puerto Ricans appear in all ITU states, the most populous states in Puerto Rico reside in New York, Florida, New Jersey, Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
