Based on existing theories and research on ethnic identity and immigration, and our empirical research in the four immigration recipients, we propose an interactive model to understand the psychological consequences of immigrants. In particular, the interrelationship between ethnicity and national identity, and its role in immigrant mental health is best understood as an interaction between immigrant attitudes and traits and response to society. This interaction is affected by the special circumstances of the immigrant community. The strength of citizen and citizen's identity depends on the pressure to support and assimilate ethnicity. Most studies show that a strong combination of national identity and strong national identity promotes optimal adaptation.
In this article we review the theory and literature on racial and ethnic identity and their interrelations as part of a larger cultural adaptation process. In addition, I explored the role of these identities in the mental health of immigrants and the adjustment of young school of immigrants. We will explain the relationship between identity, immigration and adaptation using the results of Immigration Youth Studies in the four countries. It provides universal support for interactive approaches.
