As Fleming says, prostitution is called sexual acts, sexual acts or categories, forms of economic activity, actions, or methods of making a living in such a category (39). However, this definition is controversial. A survey of this project showed that most of the themes related to prostitution and its affiliates are controversial. Each author interprets the same data differently.
Prostitutes are very common in Pompeii. Women themselves are considered to be humble, but prostitution is not a crime. Prostitution is considered a normal part of sexuality in Roman men. Prostitution is legitimately deemed a business and prostitutes must register with the authorities. Prostitution is a profitable project, Emperor Caligula bought the tax. The location where women work is different for her class. An elderly prostitute gains a high reward from a lover, lives and works in a luxurious environment. A poor prostitute is doing business with an arch. Foreigner prostitutes are active in Pompei and are greatly demanded because they are not bound by Roman society and are thought to be exotic.
Another aspect of the social status of Pompeii and Herculaneum is prostitution. Prostitution is very common in Pompeii. This is not illegal because it is a normal business like other companies, but prostitutes are considered low. It is difficult to judge the status of prostitutes, but they are considered to be slaves of Egypt and Syria, free women and foreigners. Women and daughters and other upper class women are prohibited from prostitution. Prostitution is usually part of Roman life. Many people are visiting brothels and merchants in other towns. Professor Thomas McKin confirmed 25 brothels in Pompei, but Herculaneum did not find a brothel but it was thought that prostitution was taking place there as well.
