Problems Facing Incarcerated Women

In the past few centuries women have fought for their rights from voting rights to equal rights at work. Women's resistance violates the actions of powerful people, so women can voice in the world. Prison women tend to be overlooked. In the 1970s, women's prisoners' rights movement began and continues today. The number of imprisoned women increased rapidly compared to men. According to prison law activist Victoria Law, she said that the proportion of female prisoners increased by 108%.

In this sense, we believe that our country is in danger. There is no doubt that women are confronted with many problems everyday in jail because so many women are trapped. Some of these issues include sexual violence and misconduct, medical negligence, lack of mental health care, sex, race, discrimination based on sexual orientation. The experience of extreme violence and sexual abuse in female prisons is far more serious than most Americans recognize. In the United States, the prevention of sexual assault in female prisons is highly notoriously ubiquitous, so it is expressed as "an institutional element of punishment behind a prison wall" (Davis, 1998 Year). "It is estimated that at least 40% of female prison guards are males, and most of our female prisons are male."

Researchers have consistently found that housed women face different problems than men and that these problems are often exacerbated by imprisonment. Once in prison, women are more likely to have a history of abuse, trauma and mental health problems, but treatment in prisons is often inadequate or unavailable.
