Current (Volta battery) Primary battery is driven by direct current (DC) consisting of two half cells. The two half cells are physically separated. Each half-cell consists of an electrode which is a conductive metal or graphite strip in contact with the electrolyte. These solutions are connected by salt bridges containing electrolyte solutions such as potassium nitrate (KNO 3). The salt bridge completes the circuit and allows ions to move between the two half cells. An electrode where an oxidation reaction (electron loss) occurs is called an anode.

The main battery is a battery (primary battery) designed to be used once, thrown away, charged without using electricity, and reused like a secondary battery (rechargeable battery). Typically, the electrochemical reactions taking place within the cell are irreversible, rendering the battery unchargable. Using the main battery consumes chemicals that produce electrical energy due to the chemical reactions in the battery and when they go away, the battery stops generating electricity and is wasted. On the other hand, in the secondary battery, it is possible to reverse the reaction by charging the battery by flowing a current to the battery using a charger and regenerating the chemical reactant. Primary batteries are manufactured in various standard sizes to supply power to small home appliances such as flashlights and portable radio.

For example, when trying to extend the life of the primary battery by charging an alkaline dry battery, various results are obtained. It creates a third party device and indicates that it can charge the original battery. Since the internal chemical reaction of the primary cell is not easily reversed by the applied current, the reactant can not be completely returned to its original state and position. These are commonly used in toys, flashlights, TV remote control, watches, clocks, hearing aids, radios, and so on. Primary batteries are superior because of their low cost and high energy density.
