Former art in Colombia The Andes mountains in South America are a harsh environment that lived thousands of years ago, from dry coastal deserts to long and steep mountainous areas and acre's Amazon jungle. People living there must have a wealth of knowledge about agriculture, purification, trade and the ability to live long in such harsh environments. Without telling us what they think and what they are doing we will look at the art of Andean which is our insight into the past.

This course introduces the arts before Colombia and the American architecture. It explores the main traditions of architecture and urban planning, mural painting, sculpture, paintings, masks and textiles. The first half of the semester focuses on pre-classical and classic meso-America (Mexico and Central America), the second half is Post Classic Mesoamerica, North America and the Andes. (As ARHA 388 and ASLC 383) In this course we will examine Chinese painting and calligraphy tradition from the Neolithic Age to the present. Especially emphasis is placed on the evolution of the times from the Northern Song to the Qing Dynasty and idioms of the landscape, but this course also covers the traditions of characters, birds, flowers, and stories. Finally, we will explore how modern artists can use the heritage of Chinese heritage.
Contemporary visual art in Mexico is deeply rooted in the folk art tradition by its indigenous and Spanish settlers style. Columbia's pre-Columbian art has a long history in Mexico around 1800 BC. Around 1500 AD a lot of art developed at this time and continued to influence contemporary art of Mexico. Mexican handicrafts such as three-dimensional ceramics, embroidered cotton clothes, baskets, hats etc. are noteworthy. Since the 1920's, mural paintings in Mexico have been advertised on world platforms. They usually communicate social and political information. The three great mural painters, Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, are particularly famous.
